Golden Globes 2014 red carpet: Fashion lightens up as stars light up

As awards season kicks off, a whole new ethos is visible on the red carpet – fashion has never been as fun or quirky… here’s hoping the spirit carries on to the oh so proper, everyone looking their best and on their best behavior propriety of the Oscars. The Golden Globes red carpet shows irreverence is the fashionable way forward…

jennifer-lawrencejulia-robertsBlack, white and all business: Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts
Love love love, Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior dress (she is the brand ambassador) that they are also calling the “Do It Yourself dress”. A slew of photos of various people wrapped in a bed sheet tied together with black belts, rope, ribbons and tape made the social media rounds. Oh yeah, it got noticed all right and that that too on the star of the moment. J-Law is definitely following in Julia Roberts’ footsteps with her spark. Pretty Woman herself was as lovely as ever in a surprising fashion choice, a Dolce and Gabbana ball gown with a button-down crisp white top. It was unexpected, rather like Roberts herself, a supernova still and one of the best actresses of her generation.
Cate-Blanchett-Golden-GirlClassic is forever: Cate Blanchett rules the red carpet and awards season
Hers is a formidable talent right up there with Meryl Streep’s – her performances are as perfect as her skin. Also, come to think of it, when does Cate Blanchett look bad? Hmmm, only when the role requires her to. With a searing performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, as a wife discovering exactly how layered and twisted her husband is Blanchett was a shoe in to win and she did – while completely looking the part. This Armani Prive lace gown is a work of art, suggestively see-through and demure at once, all black, but not at all opaque, perfectly complementing Cate Blanchett’s talent: a style that doesn’t scream to be heard.
sofiaFashion’s modern family ties: Sofia Vergara’s mixes kitsch with classic
A Zac Posen dress that was classic ballgown amplified by an unlikely turquoise necklace that she is being bashed for across the board – Sofia Vergara a pro at the awards thanks to Modern Family looked radiant. As for the unlikely pairing, err, she is Colombian and not Parisian or a New Yorker so fun is in her genes. Perfectly in keeping with the experimental zeitgeist of the times we think – it’s the ones who don’t make a statement who fall flat on their face these days.
sandra-bullockRisk takers in the style stakes: Sandra Bullock and Emma Thompson
Sandra Bullock defied fashion gravitas with her colour blocked Prabal Gurung number that elicited as many bravos as it did brickbats. What was she wearing? They ask. A dress without a train, hair pulled back in a chic sideways pony tail – perfect choice for an actress who wowed sans make-up in the groundbreaking Gravity. And then there was Emma Thompson, looking properly British and Mary Poppins like in an ankle length Lanvin skirt to which was attached a gold bodice. She wore Christian Louboutins and as she knocked back a martini on stage, she laughed about the soles being red with her blood! The shoes were so painful she took them off, making it clear she was an actress and not a fashion plate. Gotta love the spirit and the verve of actors all about the show and the craft as fashion steels its iron grip on the global cinema circuit.
emma-watsonNo fuss chic, straight up and slam it: Emma Watson and Reese Witherspoon embody 21st century ethos
There’s a lot to be said for keeping it on the down-low (which has always been a Kate Moss style mantra) and that ethos has come into its own as stars take fashion risks bringing a bit of the street onto the red carpet. Emma Watson is a winner in a Dior dress teamed with black cropped pants, hair pulled back and electric blue heels jazzing up the gloriously lazy, edgy, evening style. Reese Witherspoon shines in basic Calvin Klein, perfectly fitted like a swimsuit, a colour that pops, teamed with diamonds dotted here and there. This is fashion at its most effortless – and that is so very 21st century. Endorsed!
Benedict-Cumberbatch-MichaeOn the edge: Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender
They all wore black and white – but when it comes to men its only the attitude that sets them apart. Hotties with rockstar attitude Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender let loose after the Golden Globes at the party even though neither won anything. It’s going to be a good season for 12 Years a Slave. Even if you don’t win, it’s great to be part of a project that does. Meanwhile, producer Brad Pitt was vacationing in Oz… you know you’ve made it when you don’t care about award season.
Robert-PattinsonHeartthrobs and evolution: Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert Pattinson
Leonardo Di Caprio who looked like a Mafioso and took home a Golden Globe for The Wolf of Wall Street has come a long way since his heartthrob of the world days way back when Titanic sank into our imaginations for good. Love the gelled back look and the goatee – it shows an actor who has put acting above superstardom. Robert Pattinson has the same baggage to shed after Twilight is long over. The question is, will he? At the Golden Globes he debuted a new buzz cut that makes him look younger. Time to be a wolf Rob… show us what you got beyond blockbuster teen vampire idol magic…

  • Just a heads up, that photo of Robert Pattinson at the Golden Globes is from a previous year. He didn’t attend this year. :)
